“Northern Lights Sailing: Arctic and Antarctic” is a fascinating and richly illustrated account of one of the boldest sailing expeditions ever undertaken. Rolf Bjelke from Örebro met the young American Deborah Shapiro in Fiji on his first circumnavigation of the world, and they joined forces in a joint circumnavigation of the world in a north-south direction as far as there was open water.
The book describes their eventful journey along the Norwegian coast and on to Spitsbergen and No 82°24', as well as the northernmost latitude reached by a sailing ship. They then continued south to Greenland, via the Panama Canal, the Galapagos, Easter Island and on to Chile and Cape Horn, before finally reaching Antarctica.
Lavishly illustrated with over 150 unique color images and scenes from their travels, this book is a tribute to the incredible landscapes and experiences they encountered. For their sailing feat, Bjelke and Shapiro were awarded the prestigious “Blue Water Medal” and the Swedish Sailing Club’s Ship’s Bell in 1984.
